In the Shire

The best of Scotland from mountain to sea.

From the Cairngorms and Grampian mountain ranges to the sandy shorelines of Aberdeen and all the towns and villages, hills and valleys, forests and wildlife in between, the shire offers an amazing outdoors experience to complement your studies.

Where, where, where?

A little bit of guidance to get you started exploring the great outdoors – it really is great 🙂

Pubs & Bars

Cosy pubs and roaring fires welcome you to Aberdeenshire. Come to enjoy our local brews or cosmopolitan beers, lagers and wines. Internationally acclaimed Brewdog has its home in Ellon, Aberdeenshire while in Braemar the 5-star boutique hotel the Fife Arms is world-famous for its whiskies, spirits and seafood. Of course, you will also find the best whisky distilleries in Aberdeenshire – with unmissable tasting tours.

Food & Drink

With roaming hills and glens, Aberdeenshire has the finest natural larder on our doorstep. We are known for our seafood, prize beef and traditional shortbread, with some of the best salmon and trout you will ever find, and the freshest game products. Local businesses also proudly offer vegan and vegetarian dishes, using the best local ingredients in a distinctly Scottish way.

Shopping

In the towns and villages of Aberdeenshire you will find bustling yet quaint high streets lined with local, family-run shops and boutiques. From delicatessens to dress designers, art galleries and gift shops, the Shire is the place to be for unusual, individual shopping. Well served by buses from the city, don’t miss Banchory, Ballater and Stonehaven.

Hills and glens

From hill walking and mountain biking to skiing, Aberdeenshire is unbeatable when it comes to outdoor activities. Ballater is the gateway to the Cairngorms, with 55 munros to conquer and lochs and woodland trails for the less adventurous. Climbing Lochnagar is a right of passage for every visitor and resident, while nearer to the city Bennachie boasts a variety of spectacular views.

Outdoor adventure

If munro-bashing isn’t for you, Aberdeenshire’s dramatic winters enable us to enjoy impressive ski seasons. Glenshee, Britain’s largest alpine snowsports area, offers more lifts and terrain than any other UK ski centre. Our lochs and coastlines also offer up fabulous sailing, paddle boarding and wild swimming opportunities, while mountain bike enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in our hilly forests.

History

It’s not a surprise that Queen Victoria loved Aberdeenshire, and the Royal Family still feel the same today, spending every summer at Balmoral castle. You will struggle to find more castles in one area, with many dating back as far as the mid-13th century. From ruined medieval fortresses to grand homes, the history of the Shire and its people is easy to see.

The beauty of the shire leads to the silver city.

Your View …

Pural, India

I have been at Coopers for a year and a half, and I absolutely love it! I'm booking it for another year too. The location, the facilities, the rent, and the prompt attention to whatever needs to be done is amazing! I would highly recommend this student accommodation.

P.S. You can wake up 10 mins before your class starts! It's literally in the middle of the University.

Michela, Mozambique

I enjoyed my time at Hunters, and it is quiet which is perfect for postgraduate students like myself. Although I arrived during the lockdown, Catronia was very helpful and ensured that I was settled in and made me feel welcomed. I definitely recommend this accommodation especially if you want to be less than 2 minutes' walk to your classrooms and 5 minutes to the library.
